Like most people I first heard Jinjer through their single Pisces. My buddy shared it with me through a women of metal playlist he made. My initial reaction was that it was good. I liked how it built up from melodic and brooding to heavy and smashing. Overall a solid metal track. But other than that – I didn’t really take much notice to them.
Over the last 5 or so years, I’ve slowly and steadily began listening to more of their stuff. Songs like – Colussus, Vortex, Judgment and Punishment, Outlander, and I Speak Astronomy all pulled me in. Their ability to stop and start on a dime and transition from brutal intensity to a melodic, introspective and brooding type feel led me to realize just how special and unique this band is. Not to mention Tatiana’s ability to go from soulful clean singing to brutally gut wrenching screaming and growling. There are only a handful of other singers I’ve heard had that can get that range as seamlessly.
–When I saw that Jinjer was m coming to SF I knew I had to go. Needless to say they did not disappoint. Tatiana was just as good live as she is on their records. Beyond her unmatched vocal ability, she was a dynamic leader of the band. Flanked by Eugene and Roman she was like some sort of medieval warlord leading her soldiers into battle.
Eugene and Vlad held down the rhythmic backbone of the band. This was very apparent in the breakdown of Someone’s Daughter where they pummel the listener with drum and bass. Eugene is a beast of bassist and held a commanding stage presence. On the other side of the stage, Roman held down the heavy groove and atmospheric type guitar licks.
Jinjer only performed 45 minutes and I was definitely left wanting more.
